Elevating Ethical Awareness and Navigating Ethical Dilemmas
in Employee Assistance

Paul Fitzgerald, PsyD, CEAP

Paul J. Fitzgerald is a licensed clinical psychologist, Master Addictions Counselor, and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, who has been a CEAP for over ten years. He is currently the director of clinical training for Master’s programs in counseling, and teaches graduate courses including Professional Issues and Ethics at Adler University’s Chicago campus. He was previously the Clinical Director of a national EAP firm. Paul has worked with EAP accounts across multiple industries and sectors including Federal agencies, municipalities, labor organizations, manufacturing, and business. He has served on the Board of the Northern Illinois Chapter of EAPA for four years and as the chair of the Ethics Committee for five years. Paul also has a practice as a psychotherapist and affiliate for multiple EAP firms, and performs substance abuse evaluations for DOT safety-sensitive employees.

Program Overview: 
The EA professional’s dual role of providing services to both the work organization and individual employee clients provides ample opportunity for application of an ethical decision making model. On a larger scale, EAPs also face ethical dilemmas as they design, market and compete for business. This ethics course is designed to enhance your understanding of EAP ethics in the context of the EAPA Code of Ethics and the EACC Code of Conduct, and the codes of other disciplines in behavioral health (social work, psychology, professional counseling, and substance abuse counseling).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the role and significance of ethics in professional practice;
  2. Describe the EAPA Code of Ethics and the EACC Code of Conduct as applied to ethical decision making;
  3. Identify common principles guiding the ethical standards across the EAP ethics code and other behavioral health disciplines, and identify unique aspects of each discipline’s requirements;
  4. Review the recommended ethical decision making model in EA practice;
  5. Practice the ethical decision-making process using case examples in large and small group exercises.
